Updated: As you may know, Mr. Guy: Zombie Hunter, Act 1 is currently Kickstarting is finally here! So we’re talking with the amazing artists who brought this zom-com art-thology to life, starting with Walter Ostlie, indie comics artist of great renown (Ghost Bats, Cubicles, Shiver Bureau, Haxor, Metalshark Bro) and an all-around fabulous guy (with fabulous hair). Here’s what he had to say about the experience of working on this zany horror-comedy caper with indie publisher Oneshi Press!
Who the heck are you? How’d you get into making comics?
My name’s Walter and I got into making comics as a way to tell my stories visually.
How the heck did you end up working on Mr. Guy?
Serendipity. I was streaming on Twitch for a bit and met a lot of awesome artists. One of them was Jayel Draco of Oneshi fame. We got to be friends, and when he told me about Mr. Guy, I had to jump in.
Tell us about your arc in Mr. Guy—A Damned Drink.
My arc is a wild west throwback. Old dusty town, barroom brawls, but with a twist.
What did you enjoy about this arc?
Just the silly over-the-top action of it. I just loved drawing it, and this episode definitely delivers the action.
What was most challenging about creating the art for your arc?
I don’t draw much in the way of the wild west, so that took some googling. Also drawing a character I didn’t design is a little weird; I had to learn how to be true to myself but retain the original design.
What do you think about the art-thology approach of multiple artists telling one story?
It’s an interesting approach to the traditional anthology. Makes me think of what a write-thology would be like.
Tell us about how you went about conceptualizing and creating an old west dive bar full of zombies!
Google all day long. I also just looked up screenshots of Red Dead Redemption 2.
How was your experience working with Oneshi Press?
Great! The people at Oneshi are great and they are passionate about stories. That just gives me energy.
What else are you working on now, and what have you worked on recently?
Currently, I’m in the midst of working on my next big project that will be released via Webtoon. Hopefully, late this year. Otherwise, my most recent book which came out this summer is Metalshark Bro: Island of Misfit Bros! I’ve also been created a lot of tutorials on YouTube.
Where can readers find you and your work online?
Walterostlie.com is a great way to find links to everything, or I am @walterostlie everywhere (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).
Check out Walter’s other work, then check out Mr. Guy: Zombie Hunter: Act 1! And don’t forget to come back to MrGuyComic.com for an interview with Diana Camero, another freaking fantastic artist who worked on the book!
Mr. Guy: Zombie Hunter – Act 1: To Save Himself, written by Jayel Draco, features illustrations from an all-star lineup: Jayel Draco, Walter Ostlie, Diana Camero, and Jacey Chase. There’s also cover art from Sonne, letters from Cardinal Rae, and guest art from Sophia Murphy. In this 54-page graphic novel, you’ll be treated to a smorgasbord of visual stylings and a gut-busting deconstruction of your favorite classic zombie subgenres. It‘s one heckin’ heck of a ride!
